Why Donating Your Used Computer Can Change a Student’s Life in Africa

Your old computer could be a student’s first. Learn how donating tech to Computers2Africa helps bridge the digital divide, supports education in African communities, and turns unused devices into tools for opportunity and growth.

In the UK, we take digital access for granted. But in many African schools, students complete their education without ever touching a computer. Your old device could be their first—and it could change everything.

The Digital Divide in Africa

  • Over 900 million people across Africa remain digitally disconnected
  • In rural schools, students often share one textbook between five
  • Without digital access, learners miss out on research, typing skills, coding, and global opportunities

This isn’t just a tech issue—it’s an equity issue. Donating a computer is a direct way to support educational justice.

Real Stories of Change

“Before this computer, I had never typed my name. Now I can write essays, search for scholarships, and help my younger siblings learn.”
Amina, Student, Tamale, Ghana

“We used to teach theory only. Now our students can practise typing, research topics, and even learn basic programming.”
Mr. Otieno, Teacher, Kisumu, Kenya

These stories aren’t rare—they’re the norm. One device can impact dozens of learners over its lifetime.

How To Donate Tech

Free Collections and Drop-offs

You can donate working laptops, desktops, tablets, and accessories. Simply pack your tech securely in a cardboard box (max 20kg), using bubble wrap and fragile tape. Then, fill out the online form to book a free collection from your UK address or arrange a drop-off at a nearby location.

All eligible devices are professionally wiped using NIST-approved software, refurbished with educational software, and sent to vetted schools and centres across Africa. If a device isn’t suitable for reuse, it’s either sold in the charity shop to fund shipments or responsibly recycled.

You’re encouraged to make a voluntary donation to help cover shipping costs—every contribution helps get tech into the hands of learners who need it most.
