Ready to donate your computer? Follow this step-by-step guide to back up your data, remove accounts, package your device, and book a free UK collection. Computers2Africa ensures secure data wiping and meaningful reuse across Africa

Donating your computer is generous—but it’s also a responsibility. You want to protect your data, ensure the device is usable, and make sure it reaches someone who truly needs it. Here’s how to do it right.

Step 1: Back Up Your Files

Before donating, save your important documents, photos, and passwords. Use:

  • Cloud storage (Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox)
  • External hard drives or USB sticks
Donors often forget that even deleted files can be recovered—so backing up is essential.

Step 2: Remove Passwords and Accounts

Sign out of:

  • iCloud or Apple ID
  • Google or Gmail
  • Microsoft accounts
  • Any device locks or encryption
This ensures the device can be refurbished and used without restrictions.

Step 3: Package Your Tech Properly

Use:

  • A sturdy cardboard box (max 20kg, 60cm²)
  • Bubble wrap around the device
  • Fragile tape to seal the box
You can buy suitable boxes here.

How To Donate Tech

Free Collections and Drop-offs

You can donate working laptops, desktops, tablets, and accessories. Simply pack your tech securely in a cardboard box (max 20kg), using bubble wrap and fragile tape. Then, fill out the online form to book a free collection from your UK address or arrange a drop-off at a nearby location.

All eligible devices are professionally wiped using NIST-approved software, refurbished with educational software, and sent to vetted schools and centres across Africa. If a device isn’t suitable for reuse, it’s either sold in the charity shop to fund shipments or responsibly recycled.

You’re encouraged to make a voluntary donation to help cover shipping costs—every contribution helps get tech into the hands of learners who need it most.
